Core Vaccines for Cats

Core vaccines are recommended for every cat, regardless of whether they live indoors or outdoors. These include:

  • Feline Panleukopenia (Parvovirus): A highly contagious and often fatal virus, especially dangerous to kittens.
  • Feline Herpesvirus (FHV-1): Causes upper respiratory infections and lifelong flare-ups.
  • Feline Calicivirus (FCV): Leads to respiratory symptoms, ulcers, and joint pain.

Yes—indoor cats are still at risk. Diseases can be carried in on shoes, clothing, other pets, or through windows and doors. Regular vet visits and vaccinations are essential even if your cat doesn’t roam.

  • Kittens: First vaccines at 6–8 weeks of age, with boosters every 3–4 weeks until 16 weeks old
  • Booster: At 6–12 months of age
  • Adults: Every 1–3 years, depending on your cat’s lifestyle and risk factors

Vaccines are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your cat’s health. By staying on top of their vaccination schedule, you’re helping your cat live a longer, healthier, and happier life.

Vaccinations are a safe and essential part of keeping your cat healthy. Like any medical treatment, however, they can occasionally cause mild side effects. These reactions are usually short-lived and resolve on their own—but it’s good to know what to expect.

Common, Mild Side Effects

Most cats experience little to no reaction. If they do, the most common side effects include:

  • Mild fever
  • Temporary tiredness or reduced appetite
  • A small, firm lump at the injection site
  • Slight soreness or sensitivity at the injection area

These effects typically appear within a few hours and resolve within 24–48 hours without treatment.

Less Common Reactions

In rare cases, a cat may experience:

  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Swelling of the face or paws
  • Hives or itching
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Collapse

These are signs of an allergic reaction and require immediate veterinary attention. While serious reactions are extremely rare, we always recommend monitoring your cat closely after any vaccination.

Modern vaccines, including those like Felocell® 3, have been thoroughly tested for safety and effectiveness. The benefits of vaccination—preventing severe and often fatal diseases—far outweigh the small risk of side effects.
